Never in the history of mankind, has it ever transpired that a woman would not have clothes to adorn herself for every single occasion. Going by these words it is beyond doubt simply an expression of freedom and relating to the ocean’s persistent restlessness.
But beachwear is not traditional attire. It has primarily evolved over a period of time. It most probably would have come into existence during the times of the Romans as they were considered to be active for adventure. So the communal bathhouses would be the venue for such wear. After the Roman Empire fell communal bathing practices emerged in Europe. Bath in England was one such town. This was where women too took up to bathing at the bathhouses. Although the womenfolk could not be viewed by the men, they were still concerned about their modesty. So they would wear bathing dresses. It would now be laughed at but women, during those days would have weights tied around their hems just so that it would rise up when they would enter the pools.
Bathing at beaches began around the 1800s as it was then that swimming was considered to be a form of relaxation. Victorian families took beach holidays to spend time near the sea. Women had bathing machines, changing rooms, pulled by horses into the sea so that women could change into their beachwear and yet preserve their modesty from prying eyes. How things have changed now!
